You guys want an interesting image to go with Bush's speech tonight about putting military and national guard troops into the illegal immigration roundup issue, look for that picture of the police officer pulling Elian Gonzales out of the closet.
Excellent idea. Do you know any guardsmen? If so, do you think they are suited for this task? The guardsmen I've known didn't have anything good to say about the competence of their fellow guards or commanding officers. Mostly they just smoked pot and slept - and they certainly weren't allowed to go around with loaded guns.
Not to mention that the best trained are mostly already in Iraq.
I do have some friends who are guardsmen, including a currently serving Colonel, and he I would definitely trust. But rounding up poverty-stricken migrant fruit workers isn't why he still serves.
I'm beginning to get the picture. Lay-off trained border patrol officers and plug the hole with guardsmen. It's a cost-containment measure.
Do you remember the home videos our guys shot from the backs of their humvees, blasting away at anything that moved? Now transplant that scenario to Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and California.
Next step... privatize it and have those guys from Blackwater who made those murder videos controlling our borders. You know, the guys who've also been implicated in sexual slave-trading of young girls in Eastern Europe.
I have friends in the National Guard - and they take soldiering very seriously. i'm sure they're capable of the task....but i'm sure they have a hard time taking it seriously. Also, what are they going to do? Shoot at unarmed Mexicans? Arrest them, drive them back to Mexico??
