Nixon's shill has died, and in the postumous love in, we can not lose sight of the fact that he pardoned Nixon, and signed off on the "truth" known as the Warren Commission, not to mention he was the replacement for that ethical paragon, Spiro Agnew, a choice made most likely because he would grant Nixon a pardon.
Really, if you think about it, Ford absolutely made Bush possible, by not holding Nixon accountable for his imperial tendencies, thus granting a kind of institutional permission.
I wouldn't say, necessarily, that there is some grand conspiracy here, but often times, the failure to consider the implications in favor of short term gain has disasterous consequences down the road.
Not to mention that during his administration, the power alliance of Dick Cheney (youngest Chief of Staff) and Donald Rumsfeld (chief of staff, Secretary of Defense) was spawned.
ReplyDeleteGood assist!
ReplyDeleteWe in Michigan like to remember Ford for his real successes....such as the 1932 and 33 National Championships he helped bring home to Ann Arbor, when he served as captain of the football team...
ReplyDeleteAll that stuff you mentioned....yeah, agreed...
I didn't intend to show any disrespect toward President Ford. I'd still take his brand of moderate Republican over any current living being in the White House, or merely orbiting it.
ReplyDeleteI was impressed with this (two-year embargoed?!!)interview, from the Washington Post, via Atrios. Ford even calls his former chief of staff, Cheney, "pugnacious."
Ford Disagreed With Bush About Invading Iraq
Holy crap there's potent stufff there. Watch the right turn on Ford now.

No doubt...
ReplyDeleteIt's fun watching them squirm, because they want to so bad, and yet, can't, because we are in a state of national mourning.
Ah yes.
Evidentally, not long.

Ahh, Bill Bennett weighs in on all that is decent, and just, and courageous. He is indeed America's chewy moral center.

Know when to fold 'em
Know when to walk away
And know when to run
