I suppose he's a fine candidate unless you value personal honesty and integrity in a president.
Way to go BYU
"Critics at the school question whether Cheney sets a good example for graduates, citing his promotion of faulty intelligence before the Iraq war and his role in the CIA leak scandal," Debbie Hummel reports for the AP. "The private university, which is owned by the Mormon church, has 'a heavy emphasis on personal honesty and integrity in all we do,' said Warner Woodworth, a professor at BYU's business school. 'Cheney just doesn't measure up,' he said."
There is also this explanation for the poll numbers: Mental disorders are common in the United States and internationally. An estimated 26.2 percent of Americans ages 18 and older — about one in four adults — suffer from a diagnosable mental disorder in a given year.
I would say supporting a Cheney candidacy qualifies as a mental disorder.

ReplyDeleteMan, that is fucking HILARIOUS! (Mr. Thacker could do a whole riff on that.)
It's somewhat comforting to know that free thinking is still occurring in the academy--since The Wizard and I have seen our fair share of regress--yet BYU is one of the last places I would've considered as a site for protest against the right arm of BushCo.
After Bob Jones U, Oral Roberts U, and the college Jerry Falwell founded in Lynchburg, Virginia, BYU is probably the farthest right.
ReplyDeleteI about had a heart attack last week at Clermont College. A few years ago a poll of students found 100% believed in creationism but last week pretty much the whole class bad-mouthed Bush.
Times are changing.
Props to the folks at BYU, but I think what we are seeing there, at Clermont, and elsewhere has a lot to do with the same sheep mentality that got us into this fix in the first place. To quote the bumpersticker, we opposed Bush before it was cool. Now everybody wants to jump on the bandwagon.
ReplyDeleteOpposing Bush was easy: His Dad was a snake, and his record as Texas Gov. told the rest of tale.
ReplyDeleteAs far as the opposing the war in Iraq, this required the extremely difficult skill of both reading the newspapers (reputable ones, that is), paying attention to world events, and critical thinking.
When people talk about being "duped" by Bush's faulty intel, I get pissed, because I wasn't duped, and I do not even get CIA briefings.
I'm looking at you Hillary, you snake.
I agree. The rationale presented for invading Iraq was a patently obvious sham. Those who voted in favor knew it, but decided to go with the flow. Career advancement was more important than doing what was right. Let's not forget that when the primaries roll around.
