This morning I awoke, and, as per usual, I made some coffee, rolled a cigarette, and flipped on the TV to watch some cable news-I usually flip between CNN and MSNBC.
After watching the tail end of the MSNBC's rotating attempt at filling the "Imus in the Morning" simulcast, this time, with Joe Scarborough (who I will confess I find a lot more likable-and funnier-than Imus ever throught of being), I shuffled into the kitchen, toward the coffee pot.
From the living room, I heard something that sounded like Presidential Campaign Music, those strains that are both uplifting and nauseating, followed by "If I'm elected President"...
It's Mitt.
I was a bit taken aback: I know that the campaign is on, and it seems to be getting earlier. One could make a resonable argument that Hillary has been running for years now, but, hell, we're nowhere primary season, and yet, we have campaign commercials.
So I become intrigued, and hit the net looking for all things Mitt. Evidentally, the Romney camp is playing up Romney's good looks by utilizing friendly press to that effect. Let say this right now: If you vote for President based on some subjective "hotness" factor, you are an asshole, and need to shut the fuck up, stay home, and become Paris's jail pen pal.
All of this, I suppose, plays into the Romney "Morning in America" approach, as he tries to out Reagan his rivals.
We don't need a simu-Reagan. It's Reagan, and his image over ideas approach that got us here in the first place. No Reagan, No Bush, No Stupid. Remember: People loved how Bush's faux folksy charm, the "I'd have a beer with that guy" attitude, or worse, "He looked hot in his flight suit".
Christ, people are stupid.
Hell, even Mike Wallace discussed Mitt's "movie star good looks" last night on 60 Minutes (http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2007/05/10/60minutes/main2787426.shtml). I just know it's going to be more of the same until the election--lots of talk about who seems the most presidential and barely any coverage of the issues.
ReplyDeleteSpeaking of "No Stupid," on the way to work this afternoon, on NPR I heard that there is a "great likelihood" (or was it "probability"?) that Newt Gingrich was going to throw his hat into the ring. Just what we need: another candidate to make an even dozen of idgits.
ReplyDeleteBut hey...all of this makes for good entertainment, no?
Grrr...
Just what we need: A guy whose sense of history is just as distorted, or more, than BushCo's.
ReplyDeleteHow'd you like to take a class from this guy?
Watching the GOP Debate on Fox News tonight?
ReplyDeleteYour term "Thunderdome of Stupid" will live in infamy. :-)
